What's inside

  1. Before the storm. Inventory what needs power, charge everything, set the fridge and freezer cold, battery-backed CO detectors, flashlights, water, and a plan for medical devices and medicines (from Ready.gov).
  2. Backup power worksheet. Fill-in table for watts, hours, and watt-hours, with the surge rule and the 85% inverter assumption. It's the same math as our runtime calculator.
  3. During the outage. Keep doors closed, the 4-hour fridge and 48-hour full-freezer guidance, the 40°F rule, and unplugging electronics to avoid surge damage when power returns.
  4. Safety basics. Generators outdoors only and at least 20 feet from openings, no gas ovens for heat, no backfeeding, and transfer switches installed by a licensed electrician.
  5. After the outage. "When in doubt, throw it out," medication guidance, and recharging and storing your power station per the manual.

Who it's for

Homeowners and renters who want a short, practical plan instead of a 40-page guide, especially if you're weighing a power station for your fridge, sump pump, or CPAP. If you're sizing one now, start with our sizing guide.

How it was made

The checklist was researched and written with AI assistance from Ready.gov's Power Outages page and FoodSafety.gov's power outage food safety chart (both checked October 7, 2026), plus generator makers' published wattage ranges. It isn't electrical, medical, or legal advice. Follow your equipment manuals and your local officials' instructions. The PDF has no affiliate links.
